Scheduled data refresh for PowerBI service (preview)

I am testing the new preview option for the PowerBI service data connection.

I have created a "Mastewr File" with the desired data model, and started creating new reports connecting to this data file.

This "Master" PBIX is sourcing data from an SQL databsase (offsite installation).  This has been published to the PowerBI online service.

Just wanted to know can this Mastewr file be refreshed using the personal/entreprise gateways? Currently I am finding the only way to refresh the data in the master file is to refresh the PBIX file via the desktop and then re-publish.

Hopefully this makes sense.

Hopefully I am using this correctly....

    Hi DamienW,

You don't need to manually refresh data model in Power BI Service. You can use gateway to set schedule refresh for your dataset, once there are data changes in SQL Server data source, dataset and reports in Power BI Service will be updated based on  the schedule.

    Thanks,

    Hi DamienW

What's the meaning of "offsite installation"?

sql server on prem in the same domain or a sql server on prem in a different domain or sth different?

Firstly apologies, for the delayed response...

Our SQL Database is hosted in the cloud. I currently connect to it using the personal gateway (plan to switch this to the enterpise gateway)

So my question is will the data model in the source PowerBI service refresh via the personal gateway to the SQL database or do I need to manually refresh the data model?

    Hi DamienW,

What authentication method do you use to connect to the SQL Server database? As long as you can successfully add the SQL Server data source and other data sources of your dataset under gateway, you are able to set schedule refresh for this dataset in Power BI Service.

    Thanks,
