Hi all,
First time poster. Long time reader. Appreciate any and all feedback.
My scenario:
Client is after some reporting done using a data source that is external. In this instance it is hosted by a third party provider. The provider has a limited API available that does not meet the full extraction requirements.
The provider can configure the data source for external access. E.g. Works in desktop using server | database | credentials.
Doe this then mean that for the scheduled refreshes that a on-premesis data gateway needs to be set up on a external worker machine for data extraction > push to the service?
Is there any limitations (or things to be careful of) to/when doing this?
This scenario may apply to multiple data source types:
I hope that makes sense...
Thanks!
@Anonymous,
On-premises gateway is required when you want to refresh on-premises data source in Power BI Service. In your scenario, please ensure that you are able to access the on-premises data source from the machine that installing on-premises gateway.
Moreover, ensure that you add all the data sources in your dataset within gateway, and the connection strings should macth between gateway and Power BI Desktop.
Regards,
Lydia
