Get data from analysis service when the server is not on premises

I have the sever's name, username and password. I can access the data through the connection in excel, but from power bi it requires that it be on premises. Is there a way to get connected in this case?

I appreciate any help in advance.

How are you getting access via Excel? As long as you have a login and some type of network connection, like a VPN or accessing a cloud based server, it will work.

I am wondering if you are accessing in Excel via a proprietary addin via the vendor vs the Get Data tool in the Data ribbon.

DAX is for Analysis. Power Query is for Data Modeling

I am not accessing through vpn, I only change the type of login to username and password and it works, but power bi doesn't let me do this, it requires that it be on the same network so I don't know how to do it.

Thank you for your answer.

So you are telling me in Excel, you go to the Data tab, click Get Data, From Database, From Analysis Service, and you can type in the login info there, but in Power BI, if you go to Get Data, click on SQL Server Analysis Services Database and enter the same credentials there, it doesn't work? Because it is pretty much the same connector, it just looks a bit different.

Yes, it is exactly as you said.  When I try to do it in PBI it says Could not connect to the Analysis Services server because it timed out or the server name was incorrect.

But the name is correct. I copy and paste everything. And like I said, the server is owned by a third party, it is not on premises.

Hi @inm ,

I don't know how to connect to SSAS owned by a third part. But for Azure Analysis Services database, here is an official document. Hope it could help you.

In Server, enter the server name. Be sure to include the full URL; for example, asazure://westcentralus.asazure.windows.net/advworks.

Best regards
