Hi royce4,
Thank you for reaching out to the Fabric support forum with your query regarding the COM error encountered when connecting your Excel workbook to a Power BI dataset. I understand how frustrating this issue can be, especially since it was working fine a month ago.
- Open Excel and navigate to File > Account. Click Sign Out, close Excel completely, then reopen it. Sign in again and attempt to reconnect.
- Please sign in to Power BI Service and attempt to open the dataset directly. If you encounter any issues, it is likely an account-related problem rather than an Excel-specific one.
- Navigate to the Power BI workspace where the dataset is stored and verify that you still hold the admin role for the workspace. Ensure that your Power BI license is active and that your organization’s subscription has not expired.
- Remove & Re-add the Dataset Connection in Excel, navigate to Data > Queries & Connections > Manage Data Model. Remove the current Power BI dataset connection and reconnect through Get Data > Power BI Datasets. Go to Data > Get Data > Data Source Settings, locate the Power BI data source, select Edit Permissions, and re-enter your credentials.
- Verify if the authentication token has expired.
- Some organizations restrict logins based on device, location, or security settings. Please consult your IT administrator to ensure your access is not restricted. Check Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). If MFA is enabled, ensure Excel supports it and verify if your organization requires an app password. Contact IT if you suspect MFA settings are blocking the connection.
