Report colors changing when published

I am having issues when I publish a report the colors seem to change seemingly at random for the legend.

I have gone and set them all manually and then publish and they still change.

It seems to happen with datasets that have more than say...5 or 6 colors.

On the right is my PBI Desktop.  On the left is what happens when I deploy (note two deployments two different color sets).

Others have reported this issue as well....

I can repro the same issue as you. I’ve reported it internally to Power BI Team: CRI 50403912
I’ll post here once I get any update about it.

Herbert

@OneWithQuestion

I’ve got response from the Product Team.

This is an imperfect but by-design behavior. Non-explicitly-assigned data colors are assigned at run time as they're requested. Which values get which colors therefore will depend on the order in which visuals render. In this particular instance, the two visuals are showing the same category values but have differently explicitly assigned colors. If the order of visual rendering changes, the order in which non-explicit colors are assigned changes too.

Non-explicit color assignment is only consistent within a session. To get inter-session consistency, you must explicitly assign data colors.

Could you please make sure that you have explicitly assigned data colors for the visual?

Best Regards,
Herbert

Yes, I went through and selected the data colors area from the Format pane and then set each color by using the drop downs.

Then when I publish the colors will all shift.

It seems to have more to do with there being more than 5 or 6 (10 maybe) colors being charted.  😞

The response from MS is not correct.  Explicitly defined colours are changed when the report is published.  Here's a report I've created.  Top shows it in Power BI with explicitly defined colours, whilst the bottom image shows how it renders in Teams once published.  I need the colours to be as shown, and if we can't define them, they should remove the option to do that.

Hello,

I have been stymied by the same issue.  Anyone on this thread figure out how to make the Power BI Report robust to prevent this behavior?

If I manually/explicitly set colors like this:

Bananas=Yellow

Oranges=Orange

Strawberries=Red

It is annoying indeed to come in the next morning and see

Bananas=Red

Oranges=Yellow

Strawberries=Blue

That's just crazy.  Is there a workflow to get the original colors to "stick" and not change?  I'm on the hunt for a solution!

I'm also having this issue today with line charts with more than 8 lines on them - would love to see if there's an update!
