Power BI Pro Licenses to Fabric ---

Help! I am used to only using PowerBI Pro, and just now starting trial of Fabric, I think I need this! Loving the activators and import of data directly into Fabric.

Trying to even start a proposal on the cost for our team, where do I start? How much is your team spending what capcity details?

Thank you!

Hi @BrittanyRamsey ,

Welcome to Fabric! I see you’re coming from Power BI Pro, so here’s a step-by-step breakdown to help you move forward with cost estimation and capacity planning for your team:

1. Understand Fabric licensing: Unlike Power BI Pro (which is per-user), Fabric is mostly capacity-based (measured in Capacity Units, CUs). This means you pay for the compute/storage your team uses, not for each individual user.

2. Start with the Fabric Capacity Estimator:

  • Go to the Fabric Capacity Estimator and input your expected data refreshes, report usage, and workloads. This tool gives you a rough idea of what capacity SKU you’ll need.
  • You can select different workloads (like Data Engineering, Real-time, Analytics, etc.) depending on what your team will be doing.

3. Choose a purchase model:

  • For small teams or pilots, Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) can be a good start. For predictable workloads, Reserved Capacity might be more cost-effective.
  • You can see both options and pricing details here.

4. Check your team's usage:

  • In the Fabric Admin Portal, you can see “Capacity Metrics” which shows exactly how much each workspace/solution is consuming. This helps track real usage and adjust your estimates.
  • For initial testing, you can start with a trial or low CU, then scale up as needed.

5. Extra tip:

  • If your team is used to Power BI Pro, remember that Fabric includes all Pro features, but also a lot more (like Data Science, Data Engineering, etc.). If anyone on your team only needs to view content, a Pro license may still be enough for them; creators and heavy users benefit most from Fabric.

If you want, share a bit about your team size and what kind of workloads you expect, and I can help you estimate more concretely.

If my response resolved your query, kindly mark it as the Accepted Solution to assist others. Additionally, I would be grateful for a 'Kudos' if you found my response helpful.

Hi @BrittanyRamsey

Please follow below pointers

  • First try to understand about fabric pricing, It operates on Capacity Units CUs. based on your requirement you can choose either one option among payasyougo(PYGO) and reserved capacity.
  • You can estimate your requirement like What data volume are you going to implement? which type of Fabric workitems are you goign to use? and also how may users are going to cosume your output? and so on
  • You can estimate your requirement with Fabric Capcity estimatore here Fabric Capacity Estimator | Microsoft Fabric
  • If you want to know about pricing read here Microsoft Fabric - Pricing | Microsoft Azure

Hope this helps you

Thank you!
