GitHub Connected to Microsoft Fabric: Columns Show but Data is Empty in Semantic Model (Excel)

Hi Community,

I’m trying to use GitHub with Microsoft Fabric, and while the connection seems successful, I’m facing an issue with the semantic model.

After connecting GitHub to MS Fabric, I can see the column names in the semantic model, but the data rows are empty. For context, I’m using an Excel sheet as the source.

I also tried checking the semantic model settings under Gateway and Cloud connections > Gateway connections, but the option “Use an On-premises or VNet data gateway” is disabled for me.

Has anyone faced this issue? How can I get the actual data to appear in the semantic model, not just the column names?
Would appreciate any guidance or steps to resolve this.

Hi @ArwaAldoud

Recommended Steps:

  • Open your Excel file and convert your data into a proper Table.
  • Save and upload it to GitHub or OneDrive.
  • Reconnect the source file to Microsoft Fabric.
  • Go to the semantic model and click Refresh manually.
  • Check the refresh logs for any errors or messages.

If the problem persists, I recommend loading the file into Power BI Desktop, verifying the structure and data load locally, and then publishing it to Fabric to ensure everything works smoothly.

If it has, please consider clicking “Accept Answer” and “Yes” if you found the response helpful.

Hi @ArwaAldoud ,

Thanks for sharing the details this sounds like a common issue when the data source is connected but not fully accessible.

A few things to check:

  1. Excel file location: If the Excel file is stored in GitHub, Fabric might only be reading the schema (column names) but not loading the actual data. Try moving the file to OneLake or SharePoint/OneDrive and reconnecting.
  2. Gateway not needed: Since GitHub is a cloud source, the “Use an On-premises or VNet data gateway” option being disabled is expected. But Fabric still needs to load the file content, not just the structure.
  3. Try re-importing: Instead of connecting via GitHub, try uploading the Excel file directly into a Lakehouse or Warehouse and then building the semantic model from there.

Let us know if that helps—or if you can share a bit more about how the Excel file is structured and where it’s stored, we can dig deeper!
