Dataflow gen2 tables not listed in navigator

Hi everyone,

I recently set up Fabric in my organization, mainly to benefit from the extra features in Dataflows.

I set up a workspace containing 1 dataflow gen2 that queries a SQL database (through On-Premises data gateway) and a public API. This results in 5 tables.

When I try to 'Get data' from this dataflow in Power BI desktop, everything seems to be working fine:

But when other users (Viewer/Admin/Member) try to query it, the tables are not listed:

As a temporary solution, I created a gen1 dataflow in the same workspace using the gen2 dataflow as a linked table.

This works fine and the consumers can see the tables.

What am I missing?

Thanks alot in advance!

Best regards

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

Hi @toettoet,

Users with "Viewer" permissions on the workspace cannot access Dataflow Gen2 tables in power bi desktop, this behavior is a known limitation of Dataflow Gen2. Higher permissions (Contributor or above) are required to access Dataflow Gen2 tables in power bi desktop.

  • If you don’t want to give higher permissions, I suggest to create a power bi dataset based on the Dataflow Gen2 tables, publish this dataset to the same workspace. Assign Read permissions to the required users on the dataset and the users can connect to this dataset instead of the Dataflow Gen2.
  • Else since Dataflow Gen1 supports Viewer access, linking a Gen1 Dataflow to Gen2 tables allows users to access the data without Contributor permissions, please use this existing one.

Hello @toettoet

- Check if there have been any recent updates to the dataflow settings or workspace setup.

- Make sure users have the right permissions in the workspace. Even if they are set as Viewer, Admin, or Member, there might be extra permissions needed to access Dataflow Gen2 tables.

- Refresh the dataflow and update the schema. Adding a new column, even a fake one, and then refreshing the dataflow might help make the tables appear.

Dear @suparnababu8,

Which permissions do you mean by 'there might be extra permissions needed to access Dataflow Gen2 tables'?

Best regards

Hi @toettoet

Extra permissions means, it could be like Environment Maker, Basic User and System Customizer.

Please go through this documentation Security roles and permission levels in standard dataflows - Power Query | Microsoft Learn it  might helps you

Thank you!

Dear @suparnababu8

These roles apply to creating or refreshing a dataflow. I want my users to consume the dataflow in Power BI, they are configured as 'Viewer' role on the workspace. Why can't they see the tables in the dataflow?

Best regards

Hello @toettoet

If your user have Viewr permission, they are unable to view the tables. Pls have a look on below snap.

Pls go through this documentation Known issue - Dataflow connector doesn't show dataflows with view only permissions - Microsoft Fabri... You will get teh clarity.

Thank you!!!

Dear @suparnababu8

Assigning a higher level of permission is not a solution. We have the requirement to assign read access to users without the capabilities of a contributor-role.
