Power BI - Usage in using direct query option for SQL server Always encrypted database

• We are using SQL server always encrypted feature to encrypt the column level data in our application database. because of compliance requirement. • Now we would like to build some visualizations using the columns which are encrypted in database. o When we see this data in direct query mode, we are not able to view decrypted data. o Did some research and observed that we should use ODBC data source to get the data decrypted in power bi. • Challenges using ODBC data source o We do not see any option to enable direct query option while building the report / data set on power bi desktop. o As our database is huge in size, we cannot use import option for our requirement also there are some limitations on data compliance. • We would like to enable direct query option which gets data from SQL server on demand and the data should be decrypted while viewing on Power BI report also, I should be able to build my own visualizations on those columns.

  • Data security is becoming curtailed for most enterprises. As a BI tool, power BI should provide the feature for the direct query to always encrypted SQL server data source, it unblocks a critical use case while adopting Power BI

  • I was looking at this today an surprised after few years this wasn't moving at all. Still the only way of doing it is via ODBC connection which brings a lot of limitation.

Considering this comes in as standard from ADF (Enabling always encrypted column in Azure SQL Database connectors) why not enable the same on Power BI.
