Create a data column mapping tool to assist when input column names are changed
Building reports and then having users change the data column names in the input data that the report is referencing is a nightmare. You can either rebuild the report from scratch, or go through all the row by row actions in Transform Data and find/fix all the errors manually.
My suggestion is to create a tool for the dashboard version of PowerBI that will list the columns PowerBI is trying to pull based upon the build in a vertical column, and then have a second vertical column next to it with the new column names it's actually pulling in from that data source, to match the 1st columns names to the 2nd columns names. Then once all the column name changes have been re-mapped and saved, the tool would run through the steps of the build and replace mappings accordingly. Of course, the tool would have to allow for both added and deleted columns as well as name changes.
This break fix need has happened to my group several times. We cannot own the data sources. So, we are forced to be reactionary to users breaking our dashboards with whimsical changes unfortunately.
