can't access to data of dataset (created with API and stored online) in Power BI Desktop

Hello everyone,

The goal of my app would be that users will be able to download a bpix file with right datas inside to use it later in Power BI.

However, I have a problem to get access to the data of datasets I create with Power BI API.

My workflow with the API :

- I create a dataset with the right schema and push rows into it

- I create a report with the new dataset

(Until this point all is good, I have my report with all the tables into it and I'm able to consult it in my online workspace)

- Still programmatically, I download the report in .pbix in order to open it with Power BI Desktop

From here, I have some complications : the download is good but after opening in Power BI Desktop, it doesn't displays the datas, only empty tables

I noted that the owner of the dataset is not my account but the application I registered to use the API. I also have set the permissions to read/write datasets in the Azure app. It works if I put myself owner in Power BI online (manually).

The things are : is there a way to do it automatically and, above all, a way to get access to datasets which we are not owner. Like a public permission or something I missed in the settings. Or I might need gateways or totally change my workflow.

Thanks for your help,

Regards,

J.MARQUE

Hi @Anonymous ,

If you download the .pbix file from the workspace, it will indeed ask for user data source credentials. Why not use other sharing methods?

Best regards,

Thanks for your answer,

Which other sharing method would you suggest to get a report with the right datas ?
