Usage of Fabric API of Core > Git with service principal or managed identity

Hi,

I am working on automating PowerBI git integration, where i can use a powershell script to change branch in the selected workspace, and trigger it using Azure Devops Pipeline. We plan to do this to limit authorized user to access our workspace, instead, they can rely using the Azure Pipeline to do such job

The script now ready and works great when triggered from my local, using my own credentials to generate token to be used with the fabric API, but when I switched to use service principal API token, it fails saying that this principal type not supported.

Rereading the documentation, I noticed that, Fabric API for git is limited to user, such service principal and managed identity is not supported to call the API

The question is, is there any plan to allow service principal to call this API? else my automation will not be able to work completely and giving all the user to have admin access to the workspace is also not a good approach

Hi @Kei88,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.

As of December 2024, the Microsoft Fabric Git integration APIs do not support authentication via service principals or managed identities; only user accounts are supported.

It's advisable to monitor Microsoft's official release notes and announcements for any future updates regarding service principal support in Fabric Git integration APIs.
