Pre-filter power bi javascript embedded report with dynamic criteria

Anyone know how I can pre-filter my data? I'm using the javascript client and embedded the report using the power bi service. Right now, it seems to get all of the data first then filter on the client. For example, I want to filter by the current month date range, but still allow the user to alter the date range and have it then fetch the extra data from sql server. How about directQueries. Would they allow pre-filters at the sql server source?
