How to get access to 'From Power BI (Microsoft)' menu in Excel?

I would like to know exactly what license or permission I need to obtain to see the 'From Power BI (Microsoft)' sub-menu appear in my 'Pivot Table' and 'Get Data' menus of the Microsoft Excel Main 'Data' Menu. I would like to have direct access to my dataset not using the 'Analyse in Excel' option in Power BI.

I have an Office 365 E3 and Power BI Pro enterprise license.

When I use Microsoft Excel on my computer I don't see the menu but when I use Microsoft Excel online the menu is available. However, when I try to connect to PowerBi's dataset, I get an error saying that it is not possible to create a dynamic table and that I do not have permissions on the data.

Is this only a permission issue or am I not having the correct version of Microsoft Excel / Office 365?

It would take a decision tree when you want to understand the limits and differences of Microsoft products. 😊

Hi @Anonymous ,

To build reports on Power BI datasets from Excel, you need build permissions to the dataset. Read about Build permission for shared datasets.

Excel desktop app:You can only connect to Power BI datasets from the Excel desktop app with specific Office SKUs. If your SKU doesn’t support this feature, you don’t see the Get Data menu option in the Excel desktop app. Check the Office release notes to learn if your SKU supports connecting to Power BI datasets depending on your primary update channel:

Excel for the web: You can connect to datasets in Excel for the web depending on your organization's Office for the web plan.

Hi @Anonymous ,

Only users with Build permission for a dataset can connect to a published dataset using the Power BI service live connection.
Free users only see datasets in their My Workspace and in Premium-based workspaces.
For more details,please refer to:

Hi,

Okay, but If I want to access Power BI from Excel, what type of license or permission do I need?
For the Desktop version of my Excel, I don't have access to the "From Power BI (Microsoft)" menus.

As in these examples:

I don't see these menus on the Desktop version of my Excel but I see it in Excel on-line.
