Hi all,
We were successfully using the FabricPS-PBIP Powershell script to deploy our PBIP reports to Power BI until a couple of days ago when we started getting this error whenever we tried to upload the semantic model - basically when the script POSTs to the workspaces/$workspaceId/items endpoint:
'Dataset_Import_FailedToImportDataset' - Dataset Workload failed to import the dataset with dataset id xxxx . Import from JSON supported for V3 models only
The PBIP report was saved from Power BI Desktop version 2.149.1429.0 64-bit (November 2025).
Our semantic model has very little in it other than a connection string for our Analysis Services tabular cube. Does anyone know what this error means?
Thanks,
Iain

Hi @iscr ,
Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum.
This error is not related to your connection or model complexity. It indicates that the Fabric Items API now only accepts JSON imports for V3 semantic models, and the PBIP saved with the latest Power BI Desktop build is being treated as incompatible during import. This appears to be a recent behavior change/regression rather than a configuration issue.
As a workaround, try re-saving the PBIP using an earlier Power BI Desktop version where deployments were working, or deploy the report without importing the semantic model and bind it to an existing dataset. If the issue persists, raising a Microsoft support ticket would be appropriate, as this is likely service-side.
