Authenticate User to Data Source

We have a Power BI content pack (dashboard, reports and datasource) that we published to App Source (or whatever it's current name is).  When a customer installs our content, they are logged into the Power BI portal and when the data for the reports are needed, it makes a call to our REST API to get it.  That request to our REST API is authenticated, so we can see who the user is, and we can return only their data for the report.  Note that this is NOT like effective user name that you can pass to Analysis Services - this is an actual authenticated request and we capture the UPN from that.  All of this has been working great on powerbi.com for a few years now.

Now we're trying to expand this solution to our customers that don't have Office 365.  I've got a working prototype of our reports using embedded Power BI.  What I can't figure out how to do is this process I described above, where the user is authenticated and requests the data from our REST API.  I have the new site where we're hosting these embedded Power BI report pages require authentication with Azure AD, but have not found a way to force it to refresh the data by authenticating to our REST API.  Is there any links or suggestions someone could throw at me to get this scenario working with embedded Power BI?

Thanks,

Steve
