I have permissions to a report as the owner and I had previously modified / edited and republished edits succesfully, but now when i go-to transform data i get the error below:
A DirectQuery connection is required
To make changes to your model (like renaming columns and adding data from multiple sources), you'll need to switch to a DirectQuery connection. This requires
adding a local model to your file and is a permanent change.
What do i need to do to solve this?

It seems you're attempting to edit a report that's using a live connection to a semantic model. Adding another data source to this report will switch the connection type from live to DirectQuery. I'm thinking you downloaded a copy of the report from the service but chose the second one from the options.
Thank you that helps too, however the main fix was that I downloaded my data source with the "live online connection" from service rather than the PBIX file, that fixed it! Thanks

Hi @BISOLLY ,
When you refer that you have previously modified / edited the report do you mean the visuals or the semantic model?
Accordingly to the information you are giving it means that your report is connected to a semantic model published to the service and you want to make changes to the semantic model. For that you need to edit the semantic model and not the report.
One quick way to check if you are connect to a semantic model on the service is if the Table view is available on Power BI desktop if not you are connected to the service and not on the semantic model file.
