how to display negative values as number in blanket

I try to display neg gain/loss as this format ==> (number)

So,  I define new column under IF function:

 

Gain/Loss = if([UNREALIZEDGAINLOSS]>0,[UNREALIZEDGAINLOSS],"("&ABS([UNREALIZEDGAINLOSS])&")")

 

Unfortunately, I got an error saying "Expression that yield variant data-type cannot be used to defined calculated column".

 

Please help.

A simpler approach is to use a custom format:

The custom format expressions in the article below can be manually entered in the Format field as shown above. This is preferable to using the FORMAT function, since FORMAT converts the data type to text.
