date, text column appear as count

When I drag and drop a text or date/time column in the y axis in bar chart it converts into count of (column name), is it by default ?

@Anonymous yes, in a bar chart the Y axis is for the aggregated values section (Like the Values bucket in Matrix for example). It's not meant for pivoting.
