change Power bi default settings / configuration

Hi Community / Community Support,

I was wondering if you know the process of how to change the default settings in power cloud or desktop such as the canvas background with an image, font size, font style etc without using a PBIT file and without having to pick these options from the options list? Is this perhaps possible on a licensing version? This would help efficiency in creating high volume of dashboards. Essentially, I would like all styles from a PBIT file in default settings without using a PBIT file embedded with a customised palette via json file.

I don't know if PBI template apps quite allows this ? for example using a template that is used as the starting point and can be duplicated for development of other dashboards. I don't think so because the starting point for template apps is uploading a pbix file.

Many thanks

As my knowledge Power BI didn't have a built-in feature that allowed you to set custom default settings for things like canvas background images, font size, and font style without using a Power BI template file (PBIT) or manually selecting these options. Power BI primarily relies on PBIT files or manual customization to achieve specific default styles and settings.

Here are the options available at that time:

  1. Power BI Template (PBIT) File: This is the most common way to apply default settings. You can create a Power BI template file with your desired settings, including the canvas background, font size, font style, color palette, and more. Users can then start new reports or dashboards based on this template, inheriting its settings.

  2. Themes: Power BI allows you to apply custom themes to your reports. Themes define colors, fonts, and other styles consistently across the report. You can create a custom theme file (JSON) with your desired styles and apply it to your report. While themes are powerful for maintaining a consistent style, they don't cover all the settings you mentioned (e.g., canvas background image).

  3. Manually Customize: Users typically have the option to manually customize settings like font size, font style, and background image on a per-report or per-visual basis. This method can be time-consuming but allows for flexibility.

Since my information is not up to date, it's possible that Power BI has introduced new features or functionalities that address your specific needs. I recommend checking the latest Power BI documentation or community forums for updates on this topic. Microsoft often releases new features and updates, so there might be a solution that suits your requirements.

Remember that the availability of features may also depend on your specific licensing and subscription level, so make sure to review your licensing agreement for any advanced customization options.

Thanks for your comprehensive response and confirming that you don't think this is an in-built feature. All 3 of the different options that you mentioned is what I know but I was wondering if there is anything where in the paid version where all the template (pbit file) selected customisations can be provided without using pbit file. Selecting manual customisations would take too long when you are trying to develop many dashboards. PBIT files also would take too much time to be customising. Apparently business objects lets you develop from the selected customisations essentially without a pbit file.

would be great to get confirmation from the Microsoft team on whether this is possible or not or paid feature? @PBICommunity
