Hi Anonymous ,
After my tests, blank values will not affect the result. You could check if your data used text type.
And you could add filter to ignore blank values.
calender = CALENDAR ( MIN ( project[contract start date] ), CALCULATE ( MAX ( project[contractenddate] ), FILTER ( project, project[contractenddate] <> BLANK () ) ) )

You could create it with CALENDARAUTO. It'll look at all the date fields and create a continuous list from the first date found to the last one
