YTD and since inception variables

Could you help with the following calculation. I have worked out a variable which calculates the last 3 months, 6 months and one year of performance but I am struggling to work out how to write a variable which would give me the performance year to date and since inception. The calculation for year to date would be Sept 2017 NAV/Dec 2016 NAV -1, for the since inception calculation it would be Sept 2017 NAV/Feb 2015 NAV -1
