Why can't the pages pane by collapsed or hidden by default?

Since we can add a page navigator to our reports, the pages pane that automatically appears in Service is redundant and page cluttering. It seems obvious that there should be a setting to collapse or hide it by default, yet people have been asking for this feature for years. Please, please, Powers That Be, implement this feature. It should have been done when the page navigator feature was implemented.

You're absolutely right—many users have expressed frustration over the inability to collapse or hide the page navigation pane by default in Power BI Service, especially when custom page navigators are implemented.

Current Workarounds and Settings

    • Hide Page Navigation in Power BI Apps
For reports published within Power BI Apps, you can configure the navigation pane to be collapsed by default:
      • Go to the Setup tab of your app.
      • Check the option "Hide app navigation pane".
      • Click Update to apply the changes.
      Source

    • Adjust Page Tab Position in Power BI Service
While you can't hide the page tabs entirely, you can move them to the bottom:
      • Open your report in the Power BI Service.
      • Go to File > Settings.
      • Select "Display report pages as tabs along the bottom of the report".
      Source

    • Hide All But One Page
Hiding all pages except one will remove the page tab navigation:
      • In Power BI Desktop, right-click each page tab and select Hide Page, leaving only one visible.
      • Use custom buttons or bookmarks for navigation.
      Source

  • Use URL Parameters to Hide Navigation Pane
Append this parameter to your report URL: &navContentPaneEnabled=false
    Source

🚧 Limitations

  • No built-in default option in Power BI Service to hide the navigation pane outside of Apps.
  • Hiding pages is not a security feature and can be bypassed through direct URLs.

🔄 Feature Request

To encourage Microsoft to prioritize this, you can:

  • Go to Power BI Ideas.
  • Search and vote on existing ideas about hiding navigation panes.
  • Create a new idea if needed.

Thanks for reaching out to the Microsoft fabric community forum.

I understand this feature is very important to you; however, for the product team to consider implementing a new feature, it typically requires broader community engagement and demand. As interest grows over time, there’s a stronger likelihood that the team may prioritize it in future updates.
