What is the best practice for 1 Power BI report deployed to different CRM instance?

Hi All,

I have created a Power BI report and dashboard (Report_DEV) that is connected to CRM D365 DEV instance and created a CRM dashboard that is calling this Power BI Dashboard in my workspace. We are now planning to deploy the CRM into UAT instance, my plan for this is to copy the power BI report and rename it as Report_UAT then change the connection string to connect to UAT instance and publish it into the same workspace then edit the CRM dashboard to call the Report_UAT. What will be the best approach for the power BI since we are only using 1 workspace?

Thanks

Hi @rdomingo16,

Based on my understanding, there is a report Report_DEV which gets data from CRM D365 DEV instance has already deployed to the Power BI workspace. Now you want to deploy the same report but get data from the UAT instance to the same workspace, right?

As we are not able to modify data source connection in Power BI service, we need to make sure all data source are expected in Power BI desktop then publish to service. If we already have a dataset in Power BI with the same name as the Power BI Desktop file, publish the desktop file will override the existing dataset without create a new dataset.

Considering above conditions, your plan is workable and appropriate. Besides this method, you can open the report Report_DEV in desktop, then change connection via Change Source directly, use Save As option to save the report with different name Report_UAT, then publish to service. This way jump the step to copy report.

Hi there just so that I understand you are looking to deploy a UAT report into the same App Workspace, but want to have a report that is looking at the UAT data instead of the DEV data?
