What different ways to restrict access of a group of calculated measures in Power BI to a role?

Hi,

We have a set of calculated measures in Power BI which we don't want all the users to see, but a special subset of the users. For the users, we want to use a role and add them to it through the security feature of the dataset. But How to define it in the Power BI? What are the different ways to do this? I have seen a video on using the Tabular editor but that option seems to need extra payments...

1 ACCEPTED SOLUTION

This is an upstream activity and applies to the dataset.  RLS and OLS were designed with this in mind.  As to Tabular Editor, the sqlbi.com solution can be either Tabular Editor 2 which does not carry a monetary cost, or Tabular Editor 3 which does carry a monetary cost.   Come on roll up your sleeves 🙂

Three options quickly come to mind.  See if they apply to your case

:

Microsoft Learn: Row Level Security   where you would filters restrict data access at the row level, and you can define filters within roles.

sqlbi.com:  Object-level Security as explained in the article:  Hiding measures by using object-level security in Power BI

Microsoft Learn:   Manage dataset access permissions

Hi @foodd

The second lik is actually pretty good, but that one uses the Tabular editor. Now, I am trying to find ways to do this without the Tabular editor... and I want to know if there is any other way...

Hi @Anonymous

I think Row Level Security is the best option here.

I answered a similar question here https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Desktop/Dynamic-Visualization/m-p/3396210/highlight/true#M1129276

More on RLS here https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/enterprise/service-admin-rls

Thanks

Joe

Hi @JoeBarry

Thanks for your response. Of course the RLS is required but it is not the data which I want to restrict. It is the actual created measures. I want some users to see the measures and some not. Consider you using my Power BI dataset and seeing 3 calculated measures which you can use to create a report but I have 10 calculated measures there.
