Unable to open PBIX file & stuck in "working on it" status

Hello everyone,

Please help.

I'm trying to open a previously saved pbix but it's now giving me this message: working on it.

sinhnguyen1864_0-1726617615598.png

I have waited for more than 12 hours but still cannot access the file. After that, I uninstalled and reinstalled the PBI desktop app but still no improvement.

How do I resolve this?

Sincerely grateful!
Sinh Nguyen

Hi @sinhnguyen1864 ,

You can try these methods below.

1. Ensure that you have updated to the latest version of Power BI Desktop or improve the performance of your computer to meet the minimum requirements for using Power BI.

2. Cache issues: Navigate to “C:\Users\[your username]\Microsoft\Power BI Desktop Store App\AnalysisServicesWorkspaces” and delete the contents of this folder to clear the cache.

3. Try renaming the .pbix file to .zip and extract the contents. Look for any obvious corruption in the extracted files.

In addition, here are some solutions to problems similar to the one you are experiencing, which I hope will help you.

Hi @sinhnguyen1864
There are a few troubleshooting steps that you can apply to try to resolve the issue :

1. Check the File Size

Large .pbix files can sometimes take a long time to open, especially if the file contains large datasets or complex visuals.

If your file size is large, try increasing your system's available memory or closing other resource-heavy applications.

2. Clear Power BI Desktop Cache

  • Sometimes cached data can cause issues. Try clearing Power BI's cache to see if it resolves the problem:

3. Disable Power BI Preview Features

  • Certain preview features can sometimes cause instability.
    1. Open Power BI Desktop (without opening the .pbix file).
    2. Go to File > Options and Settings > Options.
    3. Under Preview Features, uncheck all options.

Restart Power BI Desktop and try opening the file again.

4. Try Another Machine

  • If possible, try opening the file on another machine. This can help determine if the issue is related to the system or specific to the file.

If none of these steps work, your .pbix file may be corrupted. In such cases, restoring from a backup or recreating the report may be the best option.
Or open a support ticket to Microsoft :

Hi @Ritaf1983 ,

Thank for your assist,

I followed all the steps you gave above but no improvement 😞

Sinh Nguyen,

Hi @sinhnguyen1864
Unfortunately, this means that the file is corrupted, if you are saving versions open the previous / if the report is published to the service try to download and to open a downloaded file.
if not...it seems that you need to recreate it.
