Hello, PBI Community.
I have a weird issue that I am likely overthinking. I have two different datasets and reports, used by myself and another person. We both have PBI Pro license. We are both publishing our reports to "My Workspace" have our reports and datasets shared with each other. However, if I attempt to connect using PBI Desktop to their dataset to build a report with Get Data > Datasets, while in my report, I get a message about needing a local copy and DirectQuery. If I select this, I get an error that is not helpful at all.
If I try the other way, where the other person opens my dataset while in their report using PBI Desktop, they also get the same error. I have noticed with a new report, that I was able to Get Data > Dataset and see the data tables but the moment I got to connect other data or do anything else, I am prompted to make a local copy and use DirectQuery. I am thinking that one of the data sources doesn't permit this.
Datasource and Report 1 - This report uses only three connections, OData to Graph API, a custom connector to access the same Graph API for those that require app authentication, too and a final one that uses the Intune Data Warehouse and select tables from that.
Datasource and Report 2 - This report uses three flat file connections, which are CSV files in that person's OneDrive. I do not have direct access to the source files plus OneDrive will likely want to share a link, rather than the file, which uses MFA and SSO.
Are there any suggestions to try to connect a single flat file with a dataset that has a OData Web API connected?
If I try a new report with a flat file, also in my OneDrive using PBI Desktop and then attempt to Get Data > Dataset - all the Get Data options are greyed out for me in the new report. It's like if I am using flat files, I cannot use another dataset. @lbendlin have you heard of this before?
Another observation, is that if I open my own report with the same three, flat CSV files in my own OneDrive, loaded into a report in PBI Desktop and then attempt to Get Data > Power BI datasets with my own dataset (the first one with API data), I also cannot connect and get a slightly more helpful error.
DirectQuery isn't available for this dataset
Either this dataset type doesn't support DirectQuery, or you have selected a dataset stored in My Workspace.
Should I make a shared Workspace?
I would think that the first dataset with API, may not work that way because it does an import of that data, except for the Intune Data Warehouse (?). However, I would think that if I was to attempt to connect from the first dataset with API to another dataset of my own with flat file CSV, this would be fine.
I get a message about needing a local copy and DirectQuery
That happens when you add another data source to a dataset that points to another dataset as its sole source. The behavior varies depending on the order in which you add different data sources.
Should I make a shared Workspace?
Yes. Sharing out of "My Workspace" is not recommended.
