Tooltip issue

Hello all,

I have two visuals a Clustered Column Chart and a Line Chart and I would like them to show a tooltip with the same format, but somehow the Line Chart has a formatted tooltip with bold fonts. (It can be I set somewhere something, I just cannot find it.)

Could you please help me how to get the same tooltip for both? I would like to have the tooltip which is in picture 1 on the left.Pic_1.pngPic_2.png

Thank you for your help!

Peter

Hi @pter14

You can use tooltip as a page option then you can make all your tooltip in the same format

Hi @pter14,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Fabric Community Forum. Also, thanks to @parry2k, for his inputs on this thread.

From what you described, the difference you are seeing between the Clustered Column Chart and the Line Chart tooltips is likely due to how each visual is configured to display its tooltip. In Power BI, tooltips can appear slightly different depending on whether the visual is: Using the default tooltip, using a report page tooltip, or displaying the newer modern visual tooltip (available under Report Settings).

The bold text you see in the Line Chart suggests that it’s using a different tooltip type (most likely a report page or modern tooltip), while your Column Chart is still using the classic/default tooltip. You can fix this by making sure both visuals use the same tooltip setup. Here’s how you can check:

Select your Line Chart → open the Format pane → expand Tooltips. See whether Tooltip type is set to Default or a report page. If it points to a report page, switch it to Default to match the Column Chart. Also, go to File > Options and settings > Options > Current file > Report settings, and check if Modern visual tooltips is turned on. Try toggling this off (or on) so that both visuals use the same style. After doing this, the tooltip formatting (font weight, layout, etc.) should look consistent across both visuals.

For detailed guidance, you can refer these Microsoft links:
1. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-custom-tooltips?tabs=powerbi-deskt...
2. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-gb/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-tooltips
3. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-visual-tooltips?tabs=desktop-new

If you would like the same tooltip design for both visuals, another good approach is to create one report page tooltip with your preferred font style and assign it to both visuals that ensures a consistent look.

Hope this clears it up. Please try the above and let us know if you have any doubts regarding this. We will be happy to help.

Hi @v-kpoloju-msft ,

Thank you for your response. I checked the tooltips and indeed for the LineChart it was set to "Report page" - > "Auto", changed it to "Default" but unfortunately nothing happened, and also nothing happened with changing the  (on/off) the mentioned setting. 😞

Hi @pter14,

Thank you for checking those settings and getting back with an update. I really appreciate the follow-up.

Since changing the tooltip type and toggling the Modern Tooltip option did not make a difference, this might be related to the visual rendering mode or theme formatting rather than the tooltip setting itself.

Check the visual style version: Select both visuals → open the Format pane → Visual section.

Confirm that both visuals use the same Visual style (either Classic or Modern). Power BI sometimes applies the modern layout automatically to Line Charts, which causes that bold font difference.

Check your theme settings: Go to View → Themes → Customize current theme → Text and make sure the tooltip font or weight isn’t customized differently.

Try recreating the Line Chart or toggling off any preview features under File → Options → Preview features (especially Modern visual tooltips and New visual container experience), then restart Power BI Desktop.

If you still see the mismatch after this, please let us know which Power BI version you are using (from Help → About) that will help us narrow it down further, as some formatting updates were recently introduced in the Fabric version.

Hope this clears it up. Please try the above and let us know if you have any doubts regarding this. We will be happy to help.

Hi @pter14,

Just checking in to see if the issue has been resolved on your end. If the earlier suggestions helped, that’s great to hear! And if you’re still facing challenges, feel free to share more details happy to assist further.

Thank you.

Hello @v-kpoloju-msft ,

Sorry for not responding yet. Tried all your suggestions, changing modern visuals on/off, changing the preview features change with restarting Power BI, and recreating the line chart. None of them worked. What I checked is when i change the color of label and value in the second tooltip the date is the value and is changing when changing the color of the value.
And in the Line chart ithe values has a marker when hovering around, and also on the tooltip you can see the blue circle for the total. Not sure if it is in connection.

My version number: 2.148.1477.0 64-bit

In the meantime i created own visual for both, but I would like to figure this out too.

Thank you for the help!

Hi @pter14,
Thank you for the follow-up question.

From your description, it sounds like you have already tried all the key settings, and the remaining difference is likely caused by how Power BI renders modern visuals internally. In recent updates (including your version 2.148.1477.0), Line Charts automatically use the new visual container and modern tooltip experience, even if the “Modern visual tooltip” toggle is off. That’s why you’re seeing the blue marker and bold font that don’t appear in your Column Chart.

Enable the new visual experience fully Go to File → Options and settings → Options → Preview features and make sure “New visual container experience” is turned ON, then restart Power BI.
Recreate both visuals after restart. This ensures both visuals use the same rendering engine and tooltip format. Once done, the tooltips should match (fonts, layout, and markers).

If you prefer the classic look without the bold font or markers, turn OFF both Modern visual tooltips and New visual container experience, restart Power BI, and recreate both visuals again.

This difference is due to the gradual migration of visuals to the modern rendering engine, which has updated tooltip styling built in. If you test the report in Power BI Service, you will notice that both visuals display more consistently since the Service version already uses the new renderer everywhere.

Hope this clears it up. Let us know if you have any doubts regarding this. We will be happy to help.

@pter14 are you using a custom tooltip page ? if not, in the format pane, you should be able to change it.

@parry2k thank you for your message, I'm using the default tooltip Type for both visuals currently, and getting this result. 😞
