Timing a Query

Is there a way to see how long each line of a query takes to run? I would really like to update an entire dataset and then go look at a log to see how long each line of each query took and the order in which they were executed.

I want to figure out how to speed up refreshing my dataset and this type of log would be really helpful for figuring out where to start. For example, I have noticed that merging columns takes a long time.

Hey @Anonymous ,

sure, you can use the Diagnostic tool within Power Query for that. It's doing exactly what you are asking for.

Check it out:

If you need any help please let me know.
If I answered your question I would be happy if you could mark my post as a solution ✔️ and give it a thumbs up 👍

@selimovd I watched the vidoe and downloaded the files. I ran a diagnostic and copied over the advanced query from my Power BI to the one I downloaded. What I don't understand is quite how to use it. Do I turn on the diagnostics and then update all my previews? Do on  turn it on, close power query, refresh my data, and then open power query and stop the disgnostics?

The reuslts I have, If I am reading the right says my whole dataset update shoud take less than 1 second but it takes almost 30 minutes to updat. I'm looking at the Exlusive Duration (sec) column on the Query Diagnostics Summary report page in the file I downloaded from the website you provided.

Can you offer me some help?

Hey @Anonymous ,

I think the easiest is to right click on the last step and select "Diagnose":

If it takes too short time make sure that the column profiling is set to the entire data set on the bottom of your query:

Let me know if that works. If you need any help please let me know.
