Timeline 2.4.0. slicer - unable to change background color

Hi, I have a problem with changing the background color in an additional "Timeline 2.4.0." visual in PBI. I would expect to see an option to do it in Visual Formating part of Visualizations bar, but there isnt one that would change the white background. I can see that in older versions of PBI it was possible. The options on my screenshot regard other parts of this visualization. Optionally, making it transparent would also solve the problem since all other colors can be changed.

I have found other thing. When using dark mode and dark theme, only border and title background can be changed. When using light mode and dark theme, all of the background can be changed. However when I switch from light mode to dark mode, until i change the page in my report the backgroung of the visualization can be transparent. I dont think it can be resolved yet because it doesnt work in dark mode with dark theme simultanously.

I'm experiencing the same issue. There is a small border which will change, when you are customizing the background but you can't controll the main part.

Is it possible to change the slicer to an older version?

Hi @JO_PL , hello 123abc, thank you for your prompt reply!

Based on my testing, I'm experiencing the same issue as you, as a workaround we can create a new rectangular shape to cover the background position of the timeline visual:

Then change the fill colour of the visual effect as well as the transparency to meet the requirements indirectly:

Result for your reference:

Hi,

Thank You for Your idea. It is very creative, and might solve the problem if using light mode. In that case i could change white backgroud to something darker with a different color.

However I am working in dark mode, and would like to change white background to a dark grey. If I create a black or dark shape with some transparency, naturally everything turns dark, and important data isn't as visible as I would expect. Turning the text colors to some light color also doesn't work because, we are purposefully turning it darker, just like the background.

Another issue with this solution is that when the shape is over the slicer, the slicer cannot be used without bringing it over the shape, and in that case white background is visible.

My temporary solution was to create a visual border, which makes it so that the white "island" on the dashboard doesn't look as bad. However I don't feel like the issue can be resolved yet, unless someone proves that there is no way of changing background to dark gray or fully transparent.

Anyway, Thank You for Your suggestion.

It sounds like you're encountering a limitation with the background color customization for the Timeline 2.4.0 visual in Power BI. The ability to modify the background color or make it transparent might have been available in older versions but seems to be missing in the current version you're using.

Here are some potential solutions you can try:

1. Check Timeline Visual Settings

Ensure you’ve fully explored all formatting options:

  • Go to the Visualizations pane, select the Timeline visual.
  • Navigate to Format Visual > General > Effects and check if there’s a background color setting there. Some visuals hide background settings under Effects.

2. Add a Transparent Background

Since you're okay with making the background transparent, try the following:

  • Check if there's an option in Visual Formatting for transparency under Background.
  • If not, you can create a background in Power BI itself by adding a Shape behind the visual and adjusting its transparency.
  • Alternatively, using the Page Background setting under the page formatting options could help if you're looking for a workaround.

3. Alternative Custom Visual

If Timeline 2.4.0 does not offer the flexibility you need, you could explore other custom visuals that provide a similar timeline functionality with better formatting options. You can search for alternatives in the AppSource for Power BI visuals.

The solution is gegnerated  by AI model.
