The provider 'Microsoft.PowerBI.OleDb' is not recognized

Hi Community,

Anyone knows why Power BI desktop suddenly lose connection to the data source after a version update?

I've seen resolution that reinstalling the software fix the issue but it's going to be troublesome for business if this is the case?

Anyone know if this is the only way?

Hi @ianbos ,

To address this issue, it's important to understand the possible causes and steps to resolve it. Here's an action plan to help you troubleshoot and fix the problem:

1. Verify the data source connection:
- Check if the data source connection settings are correct and haven't changed after the version update.
- Ensure that the data source is accessible and available.
- Test the connection by connecting to the data source using other tools or methods.

2. Update the data source credentials:
- If the data source requires credentials, make sure they are correctly entered in Power BI Desktop.
- If the credentials have changed, update them accordingly.
- Test the connection after updating the credentials.

3. Check for compatibility issues:
- Verify if the data source provider 'Microsoft.PowerBI.OleDb' is compatible with the updated version of Power BI Desktop.
- Check the official documentation or release notes for any known compatibility issues or required updates.

4. Reinstall Power BI Desktop:
- If the above steps don't resolve the issue, you can try reinstalling Power BI Desktop.
- Uninstall the current version of Power BI Desktop from your system.
- Download the latest version from the official Microsoft website and install it.
- Test the connection after reinstalling.

Thanks @v-stephen-msft. Appreciate your response.
So far steps 1-3 are all good. All connections are working fine.

The solution we tried that fixed it is reinstalling the desktop. This is abit troublesome, uninstalling and reinstalling BI Desktop every update.
