Show "active" projects across months with two dates

Hi there,

I have what seems to be a very simple problem but I'm hitting my head against the wall likely overthinking the problem.  I have a set of data with four columns (start date, end date, title, type) in a list of project data.  I'd like to show active projects across a graph of months based on the start and end date but end up just showing either the projects that started that month or the projects that ended that month.

The chart would look like the below but the counts for each month would compare the month on the x axis and would figure out if the project was "active" for that month.  In other words, if the start date was in the month of January, it would populate in January.  However, it would also populate in February as the end date would be February 10th.

In my ideal world, I would also input the "type" field in legend so I could see the four different project types across time.

if you had a measure (like active projects), the pattern here is to create a disconnected Date table (a table with the list of dates, which has no relationship to the fact table) and then create a measure which will display value only for projects where the dates are between start and end dates. That pattern is also explained in the blog below.
