Shape Map

Hi community! I have a shape map with the differente departments from Argentina. I have two problems. The first one is that one department appears at the same time in different places. The second one is that i would like to add colours to the scale. Is threes colours de maximum enabled? Thanks!

Hi @MirkoBotello

Wiki shows that several departments of Argentina in different provinces do have the same name. This is probably the cause of the first problem.

To make every department unique and precise, in addition to providing more geographic information such as provinces, the Shape Map visual has a Map type setting. Because the region keys of Argentina are not built-in, you can select Custom map and import Argentina's region keys.

Hi @MirkoBotello  - please find the below suggestions, for your first problem

  • This usually happens when the Shape Map cannot uniquely identify department names.
  • Ensure your department names match exactly with Power BI’s internal map reference (sometimes official ISO names or specific spellings are required).
  • Try using latitude/longitude data instead or include the province/state name alongside the department name to make them unique.

For your second problem (color scale customization):

1.If you are using the default diverging color scale, Power BI allows up to three colors (minimum, center, and maximum).
If you need more, you can:
2.Use a custom color measure in DAX and apply it in the formatting options.
3.Switch to a Choropleth map in ArcGIS or another mapping visual that allows more color flexibility.
4.Use conditional formatting in a table with gradient-based rules and link it to your map data.
