I haven't seen anything similar in style but a custom boxplot visual also shows spread of data
The difference here though is that I see not only the spread but also the individual values within it. Great when there are outliers.
True. However for large datasets it can become cluttered and boxplots will show outliers as well.
I do agree, the visual you've shown can often be a nicer way of showing spread
