To connect PBI to SQL the domain most be equal.

For SAP BW and PBI is the same rule?

When connecting to SQL Server database from Power BI Desktop, SQL Server and Power BI Desktop don’t have to be located at the machines that are in same domain. As long as you can ping to the machine that installing SQL Server from the machine that installing Power BI Desktop, and you configure SQL Server properly, you are able to use Database credential in Power BI Desktop to connect to SQL Server database, or you can use Windows credential and runas /netonly command to connect to the target SQL Server database in Power BI Desktop.

Besides, when connecting about SAP BW in Power BI Desktop, it requires Database credential where you need to put username and Password. From my point of perspective, the connection process is similar to that we use Database credential in Power BI Desktop to connect to SQL Server, Power BI Desktop and SAP BW don’t have to be in same domain.  I would recommend you use BEx Query Designer to simulate this connection process, then connect to SAP BW in Power BI Desktop.
