Restrict access to Power BI Desktop application
Power BI Desktop has a sign-up and sign-in prompt that can be easily bypassed by closing the window(s) and then use Power BI without a login.
- What controls are in place to restrict access to Power BI Desktop if you don't sign-in? If I switch account and close, I can still use the programs full features without a sign-in.
If I turned off self-registration for Power BI Free, the user can still use Power BI Desktop to open and access a pbix file.
CraigLockley I think with group policies you can control what can be installed or not installed. It is more of an IT issue than login in power bi desktop.
If you strictly want to know if power bi desktop not allowed to be used without login, I don't think there is any way to restrict that. I still cannot wrap my head around if software is allowed on a user destkop (not restricted) then what values it bring not to be used without login.

CraigLockley Hmmm interesting question, the way I look at it, if use is now allowed to use Power BI desktop, it should never be installed on his computer, and may be restrict by IT policies, even let's it is installed, what challenge you are facing that you don't want use not to use Power BI desktop without login?
Great questions. I have thought about what controls can be implemented including WIF policies with InTune, AppLocker, or Windows Business Store since Power BI Desktop can only be installed through the Windows Store.
Even if I can manage these controls, if an admin user has access to install, they can still access the program without a login.
I am hoping that restricting self-registration for free users in the tenant admin settings to restrict who can access, but if they can circumvent this control by not signing in, I can't find any other controls other than the ones you suggested. (blocking or managing installation).
