Reports won't publish - Direct Query

Hello Team,

I'm getting very confused when connecting to a "Semantic Model".

I have created a report that is conneected to a Semantic Model and when i publish the report it gets published correctly with no issue. However lets say i make any changes and publish again i get a message saying replacing report where i say Replace:

 and then i get this:

ViralPatel212_2-1732888446148.png

Now i don't understand why it saying that because the report doesn't create a semantic model in the workspace and also the changes are not being shown on as well?

Not sure why this is happening. i assumed if i published the report then it would jus replace and publish?

Thanks

Viral

Hi @rajendraongole1

Thanks for that, i was able to fix it. Initially i was saving my files as PBIB and now i have changed to PBIX and it fixed the publishing error. I know get a success message after publishing this includes if i make changes to the report and republish

Nice to hear!

Thanks for the update.

@rajendraongole1 sorry to ask but i actually dont know why but would you know why it worked via PBIX and not PBIB?

Hi @ViralPatel212 - as you mentioned, when working in Power BI Desktop, you can import data and create a local model where transformations or dataset merging is possible because all the data is stored and processed locally.

In Power BI Service, live connection mode strictly queries the underlying dataset and doesn’t allow alterations or combining other sources. This ensures the integrity and performance of the underlying Semantic Model but limits flexibility.(pbib)

Hope this information helps.

Hi @ViralPatel212 - Your assumption is correct in most cases: when you publish a Power BI report, it should simply replace the existing report in the Power BI Service and reflect any updates made.

If your report is using a Live Connection to a semantic model (like Analysis Services or Power BI dataset), the underlying dataset changes are controlled by the model. Any report-specific changes should still be reflected after publishing, as long as they don’t conflict with the dataset schema. If the dataset is managed in another workspace, ensure that workspace is accessible and the dataset hasn’t been modified or removed.

Verify that your changes in Power BI Desktop are saved before publishing.

Ensure you’re connected to the correct semantic model or dataset in Power BI Service.

Hope this information helps.
