Relationship between Power BI Desktop and Web

Hello,

 

I am sure this is a very basic question, but I am having a hard time understanding how the Power BI Desktop app, Excel, and Power BI work together. I assumed that I could work on the data and the reports from the Desktop app and publish that to the web for dashboards, but it seems once it's published it can't be worked on anymore from the Desktop app. I am also not sure how to preserve Excel data models. I feel like there are 3 prodcuts that don't really work together. Am I missing something?

    You can still update Excel or Power BI Desktop file and republish and that refreshes the data set. If you use Excel file on OneDrive and choose to "Connect" it versus "Import", then that all happens automagically.

      ok, but for instance, if I want to connect to an Excel file in OneDrive can I use the desktop app to build reports or do I have to use the web UI at that point?
