Regarding license type

What is the difference between Pro, Fabric and Premium license

Hi @Thulasidharan

In the context of Microsoft Power BI (now largely integrated with Microsoft Fabric), a "Pro" license allows basic content creation and sharing with other users, while "Fabric" refers to the overall platform encompassing various data services including Power BI, and "Premium" unlocks advanced features like large-scale data processing and is typically purchased as a capacity-based license, meaning you pay for the computing power needed rather than per user, with "Premium Per User" (PPU) offering some Premium features on an individual user basis; essentially, Pro is for basic user functionality, Fabric is the platform itself, and Premium provides additional power for heavy data workloads.

Pro License: A standard user license allowing you to create, edit, and share Power BI content with other users, suitable for most business users.

Fabric: Not a license type, but the overall platform encompassing Power BI and other data services like data lakes and warehouses, where you would use your existing Power BI Pro or Premium license to access features

Premium License: A capacity-based license offering advanced features like large datasets, advanced analytics, and more powerful data processing capabilities, often used for large-scale deployments where many users need to access heavy data analysis.

Hi , Hope you are doing good!

1. Power BI Pro:

  • Scope: Designed for individuals and small teams.
  • Collaboration: Allows users to create, share, and collaborate on reports and dashboards within an organization.
  • Data Capacity: Each report can handle up to 1 GB of data.
  • Data Refresh: Up to 8 refreshes per day.
  • Sharing: Requires all users (viewers and creators) to have a Pro license for sharing and collaboration.
  • Cost: Billed per user, per month.

2. Power BI Premium:

  • Scope: Designed for larger organizations and enterprise-level use.
  • Collaboration: Offers the same collaboration features as Pro but with advanced capabilities.
  • Data Capacity: Much higher limits—datasets can be up to 400 GB, and storage scales beyond the 1 GB limit in Pro.
  • Data Refresh: Up to 48 refreshes per day.
  • AI & Advanced Features: Includes AI capabilities, Paginated Reports, and the use of Power BI Dataflows.
  • Premium Per User (PPU): Available as an add-on to Pro, providing Premium features on a per-user basis.
  • Cost: Billed either per user (Premium Per User) or by capacity (Premium Capacity, where sharing does not require all users to have a Pro license).

3. Microsoft Fabric:

  • Scope: Integrated data platform for data engineering, data science, and analytics across various Microsoft services (including Power BI).
  • Collaboration: A more holistic tool that unifies Power BI with other services like Azure Synapse, Data Factory, Data Lake, and more, enabling seamless data workflows from ingestion to visualization.
  • Capabilities: Combines advanced features of Power BI Premium, with additional Lakehouse, OneLake, Warehouse, and Real-time Analytics capabilities.

Cost: Tied to the use of Fabric workloads and services, with consumption-based pricing depending on how much of the services you use.

Key Differences:

Pro is ideal for individual users or small teams needing basic sharing and collaboration.

Premium is for large-scale operations with higher capacity, advanced AI, and performance needs.

Fabric integrates Power BI with broader data management and analytics capabilities, offering an all-in-one platform for advanced data tasks.
