Real-World Examples of Secure Big Data and Cloud Deployment with Power BI

Dear Power BI Community,

As our organization explores the possibilities of harnessing big data securely in the cloud with Power BI, I'm keen to learn from real-world examples or case studies of organizations that have successfully implemented Power BI for big data analytics in a secure cloud environment.

Could you please share insights into how organizations have leveraged Power BI to handle large-scale datasets securely in the cloud? I'm particularly interested in understanding the challenges they faced, the solutions they implemented, and the benefits they realized.

Additionally, examples highlighting best practices in ensuring data security, compliance with regulations, and protecting sensitive information while harnessing the power of big data analytics with Power BI would be highly beneficial.

Your firsthand experiences and knowledge of organizations that have navigated the complexities of secure big data and cloud deployment with Power BI will provide invaluable insights and guidance to our organization as we embark on a similar journey.

Thank you for sharing your expertise and contributing to our understanding of secure big data analytics in the cloud with Power BI.

Warm regards,
Manoj Prabhakar

Hi,  @manoj_0911

Power BI is truly a powerful tool when it comes to processing large-scale data securely in the cloud. Here are some case studies and real-world applications that demonstrate how organizations can successfully leverage Power BI for big data analytics and ensure data security and compliance.

Case1:

Heathrow Airport is the UK's gateway to the world, with 80 million passengers traveling through Heathrow every day to unknown destinations. To make the passenger experience more enjoyable, Heathrow uses Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Azure to enable the airport's 75,000 employees to better assist passengers through storms, cancellations and other disruptions. Here are the key aspects of Heathrow Airport’s successful use of Power BI to handle data at scale and ensure data security:

1. Challenge:

- Airport operations need to understand changes in passenger traffic in real time so they can prepare. Without real-time data, employees have difficulty responding to emergencies, such as flight delays, weather changes, etc.

2. Solution:

- Heathrow uses Microsoft Azure to extract data from back-end business systems, including weather tracking, flight planning, baggage tracking, cargo tracking, etc. This data is then transferred into Power BI.

- Power BI transforms this back-end data into visual reports and dashboards to provide insights to airport employees. For example, if a change in airflow aloft causes 20 flight landing delays, allowing 6,000 additional passengers to enter the airport at 6:00 p.m., employees will be notified 1 to 2 hours in advance so that additional personnel, buses, food, and other resources can come cope with this situation.

3. Benefits:

-Real-time data helps employees prepare in advance and smoothes the flow of passengers through the airport.

- Airports can predict passenger traffic and respond in advance to disruptions that may cause stress for passengers and employees.

4. Data Security and Compliance Best Practices:

- Data desensitization and encryption: Ensure sensitive information is not leaked.

- Compliance: Comply with regulations such as GDPR, HIPAA, etc.

- Access control: Restrict employee access to data.

The Heathrow Airport case demonstrates how to securely process large-scale data in the cloud and leverage the power of Power BI to improve the passenger experience.

vjianpengmsft_1-1709004036608.png

Humana is a Kentucky-based health insurance company dedicated to helping millions of medical and specialty members achieve optimal health. Their work principles include delivering a simple and seamless customer experience, helping members achieve optimal health across the five influencers (primary care, social determinants of health, pharmacy health, home health and behavioral health) and gaining power through integrated technology. As of 2019, Humana had 46,000 employees and reported revenue of $64.9 billion. At the end of 2019, Humana entered into a seven-year strategic partnership with Microsoft to leverage technology to better serve its members.
1. Challenges faced:
- Humana faced data fragmentation from 47 different data sources and business intelligence tools. This results in siled data, with users often spending weeks or even months looking for specific information.
2. Implemented solutions:
- To solve the problem of data fragmentation, Humana decided to integrate 47 different data sources and business intelligence tools into a unified solution, with Microsoft Power BI as the main business intelligence tool.
- Humana’s product implementation team works to standardize data sets and reporting tools to reduce the number of data sources and business intelligence tools.
3. Benefits achieved:
- By consolidating data sources, Humana can now access and analyze data more efficiently, improving data consistency and reliability.
- Leveraging Power BI and Azure, Humana was able to create a self-service reporting platform that provides a unified overview of members. This helps better predict patient health outcomes, thereby improving their healthcare experience and reducing risk factors.
- Humana also uses "social determinants of health" to gain insights into a client's health, such as the client's living conditions, community and social interactions. By correlating this data with other information such as existing health conditions, age, race, gender and more, Humana can better intervene to meet a customer's medical needs.
4. Best practices for data security, regulatory compliance, and protecting sensitive information:
- Humana is migrating all data to Microsoft Azure Data Lake Storage to create common datasets and gain access through Azure Active Directory groups. This helps eliminate dissonance between data sources and tools and improves overall efficiency.
- When using Power BI, Humana needs to comply with data privacy regulations to ensure data security and the protection of sensitive information.
This case shows how you can leverage Power BI and Azure to improve healthcare delivery, increase the efficiency of data analysis, and better meet the needs of your members.
