Project Online - Seeing all the Baselines in PowerBi

Hello, has anybody found the solution to show Baseline 1, Baseline 2, Baseline 3, etc...from Project Online into PowerBi? I am able to see the first Baseline and only this one, nothing else is showing in the Project PowerBi Content Pack provided by Microsoft.

Thank you!

Hi @dguibert

As of October 2023, the Project Online OData feed and Microsoft's default Power BI Content Pack only provide access to the initial baseline data (Baseline0). Unfortunately, Baseline1, Baseline2, and subsequent baselines are not exposed in the standard OData feeds used for reporting in Power BI.

To display all baselines (Baseline1 through Baseline10) in Power BI, you can consider the following options:

  1. Custom Extraction Using CSOM or REST API:
    • Develop a custom application or script utilizing the Project Online Client-Side Object Model (CSOM) or the REST API.
    • Extract all baseline fields by accessing the project's task data programmatically.
    • Export the data to a format compatible with Power BI (e.g., CSV, Excel, or a database).
    • Import the exported data into Power BI for reporting and visualization.
  2. Data Export via Project Professional:
    • Open your projects in Microsoft Project Professional connected to Project Online.
    • Export the project data to Excel, ensuring all baseline fields are included.
    • Import the Excel file into Power BI for analysis.
  3. Use a Third-Party Solution:
    • Explore third-party tools or add-ins designed to extract comprehensive baseline data from Project Online.
    • Integrate these tools with Power BI to access and display all baseline information.
  4. Custom OData Extension (Advanced):
    • Extend the OData feed by customizing the Project Online reporting schema (note that this requires advanced permissions and may not be supported).
    • Include additional baseline fields in the extended feed.
    • Connect Power BI to the custom OData endpoint to access the extended data.

Please Note:

  • Limitations: The standard OData feed has limitations and does not include all baseline fields due to performance considerations.
  • Permissions: Accessing data via CSOM or REST API requires appropriate permissions in Project Online.
  • Maintenance: Custom solutions may require ongoing maintenance to accommodate updates in Project Online or Power BI.

Recommendation:

For a reliable and maintainable solution, using the Project Online REST API or CSOM to extract and import the data is the most effective method. This approach allows you to programmatically access all baseline fields and automate the data import process into Power BI.
