PowerBI on Azure VM

Hi team, We are setting up PowerBI for our organization for the first time. We have beeen asked to use Azure VM for PowerBI desktop and gateway installed in two seperate VMs. Is there any limitations on that . I want to understand how PowerBi can connect to the gateway installed in different machine. Also, should I have different VMs ofr gateways for Dev, UAT and Prod?

Sorry this is the first time we are setting up, so looking for some insights

Hi @Anonymous ,

To connect Power BI to a gateway installed on another computer, you need to configure Kerberos-based Single Sign-On (SSO) for a seamless connection. There are several steps to do this:

  1. Install the Microsoft Local Data Gateway on the computer that will bridge Power BI and the local data source.
  2. Configure the gateway service account to run as a domain account with an SPN (Service Principal Name).
  3. Enable Kerberos constraint delegation on the gateway service account.
  4. Configure the data source in Power BI to use the gateway with Kerberos SSO for DirectQuery or Import mode.

For more details, you can refer to below document:
