PowerBI Desktop not opening: Something went wrong - AS Process PID=10308 has exited with ExitCode=0

Hi, I used PowerBI Desktop before. Now I have this error and PowerBI Desktop doesn't open anymore on my Windows 11.
What I tried:
- Restarted PC.
- Reinstalled the app from the official site and Microsoft Store.
- Updated and reinstalled .NET Framework.
- Checked and updated Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime.
- Updated SQL Server Management Studio.
- Updated Client.Windows.AnalysisService via official site.

I though the main problem was in Client.Windows.AnalysisService as it was included in the error details. But no idea how to fix it.

The details of the error that I get:image.png
PowerBINonFatalError:
{"AppName":"PBIDesktop","AppVersion":"2.143.1204.0","ModuleName":"Microsoft.PowerBI.Client.Windows.dll","Component":"Microsoft.PowerBI.Client.Windows.AnalysisServices.AnalysisServicesProcess","Error":"Microsoft.PowerBI.Client.Windows.AnalysisServices.AnalysisServicesProcessUnexpectedExitException","MethodDef":"AcquireServerDynamicPortInfo","ErrorOffset":"110","ErrorCode":""}

Thank you, community!

Hi @User-H ,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Fabric Community and sharing the detailed info.

You've already tried quite a few helpful steps.

In addition to what you've done, here are a few more things that have resolved this issue for other users:

1. Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from this official Microsoft link.

2. Check if any firewall or endpoint protection is blocking local ports or msmdsrv.exe, which is Power BI's internal Analysis Services engine. If you're in a managed IT environment, some security policies might silently prevent it from running.

3. Try installing an older version of Power BI Desktop from the official version archive. In some cases, recent builds may have conflicts that earlier versions don't.

4. Ensure that Power BI Desktop was installed on the same drive where Windows is installed. So if you had it installed on a different drive, try installing it on the system drive instead.

Hi @User-H ,
Just checking in to see if you're still encountering the “AS Process PID has exited with ExitCode=0” error when launching Power BI Desktop, or if the suggestions provided, such as installing the latest Visual C++ Redistributable, checking for firewall blocks, or installing Power BI on the same drive as Windows, helped resolve it.

Feel free to reply back if you need further help.

Thank you.

Hi @freginier, I tried a half of fixes you suggested and didn't try another half because as I meantioned I can't open PowerBI app at all, not saying about doing something inside the app.

Phase 1: Quick & Easy Fixes (Resource & Application State)

  1. Restart Power BI Desktop:

    • Completely close Power BI Desktop (check Task Manager to ensure no background processes are running).
    • Reopen it. Sometimes a fresh start clears transient issues.
  2. Close Other Applications:

    • Close any other memory-intensive programs (web browsers with many tabs, other analytics tools, heavy games, video editors, etc.).
    • Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc): Go to the "Processes" tab and see how much RAM is being used by Power BI Desktop and other applications. If you're consistently near 80-90% RAM utilization or more, lack of memory is a major suspect.
  3. Open a Fresh Power BI Desktop Instance, Then Open Your File:

    • Instead of double-clicking your .pbix file directly, open Power BI Desktop first.
    • Then, go to File > Open report and browse to your file. This can sometimes bypass initial loading issues.
  4. Try an Older Version of Your File (If Available):

    • If you have a previous saved version of your .pbix file, try opening that to see if the issue is specific to the current file or your environment.

Phase 2: Power BI Desktop Application Integrity

  1. Update Power BI Desktop:

    • Outdated versions often have known bugs that are fixed in newer releases.
    • Go to Help > About in Power BI Desktop to see your current version.
    • Download the latest version from the official Microsoft Power BI website: https://powerbi.microsoft.com/desktop/
    • Always download the 64-bit version.
    • Install it, which will typically update your existing installation.
  2. Repair Power BI Desktop:

    • Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
    • Find "Microsoft Power BI Desktop" in the list.
    • Click on it, then select Advanced options.
    • Click the "Repair" button.
    • After repair, restart your computer and try Power BI Desktop again.
  3. Reset Power BI Desktop (Use with Caution):

    • In the same "Advanced options" for Power BI Desktop (from step 6), there's a "Reset" button.
    • WARNING: This will delete the app's data, which might include local cache or settings. It's more drastic than repair. Only use if repair doesn't work.
  4. Reinstall Power BI Desktop:

    • If Repair/Reset fails, uninstall "Microsoft Power BI Desktop" from Apps & features.
    • Restart your computer.
    • Download the latest installer from the official Power BI website (link above) and perform a fresh installation.

Phase 3: Model-Specific & Advanced Troubleshooting

  1. Check Data Source Connectivity:

    • Open your .pbix file.
    • Go to Transform data (Power Query Editor).
    • Right-click on each query and select "Refresh Preview" one by one. This can help identify if a specific data source or query step is causing a crash.
    • Check File > Options and settings > Data source settings to ensure all credentials are correct and connections are valid.
  2. Disable Fast Combine (Power Query Option - if you suspect merging issues):

    • In Power BI Desktop, go to File > Options and settings > Options.
    • Under GLOBAL > Data Load, find "Type detection" and "Relationships" sections.
    • Look for "Fast Combine" options (sometimes under Privacy). Try changing the "Data Privacy Levels" to "Always ignore Privacy Level settings" temporarily for troubleshooting. (Revert this for security/best practice after testing). This can sometimes resolve issues with data mashups.
  3. Check for Incompatible Visuals/Custom Visuals:

    • If the crash happens when opening a specific report page, try deleting or hiding visuals on that page one by one to see if a particular visual (especially custom visuals) is causing the issue.
  4. Simplify Your Model (Temporarily for Testing):

    • If you have a very complex model with many tables, relationships, or complex DAX, try to simplify it.
    • Create a new .pbix file: Start a new blank Power BI Desktop file.
    • Copy only essential queries: Copy only the fact tables and the most critical dimension tables from your existing file's Power Query Editor to the new file.
    • Build basic relationships: Establish only the necessary relationships.
    • Add a few simple measures: See if you can get basic calculations to work without crashing. This helps isolate if the complexity of your full model is the problem.
  5. Disable Antivirus/Security Software (Temporarily):

    • Sometimes, overly aggressive antivirus or firewall software can interfere with Power BI Desktop's internal processes.
    • Temporarily disable your antivirus and try opening/refreshing your model.
    • If it works, you'll need to add an exception for Power BI Desktop's executables and processes in your antivirus settings. (Remember to re-enable your antivirus afterward!)

Start from the top of this list and work your way down. After trying each solution, restart Power BI Desktop and test if the error persists. The AnalysisServicesProcessUnexpectedExitException is often resolved by addressing resource constraints or ensuring the Power BI Desktop application itself is in a good state.
