PowerBI Desktop Report - time Saving way to migrate from Individual Connections to PowerBI Dataset

Hi! Is there a quick/easy/time saving way to change a PowerBI Desktop Report so that it uses a PowerBI Dataset, instead of Individual Connections?

For context, I think leveraging the new possibility to use a dataset accross workspaces is great, so I want to create a "Datasets workspace" and migrate all of our reports and arrange them in separate "Consumption workspaces" that use the data from this "Datasets workspace". We would probably need to rebuild all our reports for this, so I'm looking for a way to keep all the report configuration (visuals, filters, etc), just feeding from the live connection to the PBI dataset instead of the individual connections.

Hi! I ended up doing the following, which worked.

  1. Saved the PBI Desktop file that has all the visuals, measures, etc as a Template (.pbit)
  2. Opened the PBI desktop template file
  3. Went into Edit Query and deleted all the queries
  4. Also, deleted all DAX calculated tables as well
  5. After the file is "clean" the option Get Data from PowerBI Dataset is enabled again
  6. Used get data / from PBI Dataset and selected the dataset
  7. After that, everything worked

Hi @Anonymous

You could create an app from those workspace, then in the "Datasets workspace", get and install the apps.

Steps to sharing your dataset

Thank you for your reply, Maggie. The question was more in terms of a a quick/easy way to change the PowerBI Desktop so it feeds from the dataset, instead of the invididual connections, not necessarily the sharing part.
