Power BI Web Update

Good afternoon

We have a user who needs the data you upload through the Power BI Desktop App to be automatically updated on the Power BI web without having to update that data manually from the Power BI Desktop App.

Is there a way to do it? Could you tell me how to do it, please?

Best regards

Thank you

Hi @robsanser ,

If data is imported to power bi desktop, you will need to re-publish the pbix for updated data to reflect in power bi services.

You can set gateways in Services and schedule refreshes so that changes in database/source gets automatically reflected in services.

Give a thumbs up if this post helped you in any way and mark this post as solution if it solved your query !!!

According to the user, she does not want to use gateways and in the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZokiuLL9mjo&feature=youtu.be it is indicated that if you use Drive it is not necessary.

It should be able to update from the web without needing to update in dextop

Hi @robsanser ,

Usually automatic refresh of reports in power bi services are done by Configuring Scheduled Refresh of its dataset.

Some refresh scheduling require gateways while some don't depending on the type of database being used.

As per microsoft documentation,

"The Scheduled refresh section is where you define the frequency and time slots to refresh the dataset. Some data sources do not require a gateway to be configurable for refresh; other data sources require a gateway."

From the youtube video link you sent, check the video portion after 5 minutes and you will see the user configuring refresh schedules.

Check this below documentation and this should probably clear your concerns:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/connect-data/refresh-scheduled-refresh

Good morning

First of all, forgive me for the delay in answering as I have been on vacation and I am waiting for the user to try the last solution indicated again and/or test ourselves in my Department what is indicated to verify whether such a solution is feasible or not.

Best regards

Thank you

Good morning

Finally the user will look for "another solution" or we do not already know if she will perform the actions that she wanted to do so you can close the post but I do not give it for a solution since until then the user told us that the problem continued to reproduce.

Thanks a lot

@robsanser , power bi service should get updated automatically.

The point is that you are not automatically updated the data in this particular case.

The user has the Power BI Administrator role.

Do we have to give him any extra permission or how can this problem be solved?

Thank you

Hi @robsanser ,

>>We have a user who needs the data you upload through the Power BI Desktop App to be automatically updated on the Power BI web without having to update that data manually from the Power BI Desktop App.

1.From your description, if the words "needs the data you upload through the Power BI Desktop App to be automatically" are referred to that the data of data source needs to update, you may upload or move the files of data source to cloud service, such as SharePoint Online , OneDrive,,,etc,  then use related connector SharePoint Folder connector and  Web connector to get data .

By default, Power BI checks about every hour if a dataset connected to a file on OneDrive or SharePoint Online requires synchronization. That is to say OneDrive refresh synchronizes datasets and reports with their source files automatically.

2.If the words "needs the data you upload through the Power BI Desktop App to be automatically" are referred to that you need the data which is via some actions like transform data in Query Editor, create columns, change data model ,,,etc to update automatically, then you may need to publish the .pbix again from Power BI Desktop to Power BI Service once it changed via the actions above.

In Addition, if the data source is on premise and couldn't be moved to cloud service, you may need to install gateway and configure Schedule refresh to get updated data. see more: :On-premises data gateway , Add a data source ,Configure scheduled refresh . Of course, this is suitable for the scenario 1 above.

What's more, there is no requirement for the license or extra permission to get updated data in scenarios above, unless you would like to get more refresh times.

Best Regards,

Amy
