Hi Community,
I need your help to understand what's the current and official position of Microsoft Power BI Program team regarding the SQL Server Analysis Services HTTP data pump, (HTTPs endpoint).
Last year I've written some posts about how to use Power BI with the HTTPs endpoint, but so far there are some doubts and questions about it because there isn't an official position of PBI product team about it.
I've proven that it works, check out the following posts:
http://www.luisquedas.com/2017/10/how-to-connect-power-bi-desktop-to-olap_9.html
http://www.luisquedas.com/2017/10/how-to-publish-power-bi-report-that.html
But from other community's posts I got:
" I'm surprised you managed to make the live connection to a msdmpump.dll work because Microsoft responded to me, saying it is not supported in live connection. "
" As confirmed with Product Team, this kind of connection type (HTTP Access to AS server) may still work in some condition. But actually, it's already not supported today"
We have several customers using PBI Desktop connected to SQL Server Analyses Services through the HTTPs Data pump, they made huge investments in OLAP development during the last 10/15 years and now they are using PBI to create their reports but they are very nervous about this situation... Is it possible to have an official position from Power BI Product Team about this way to connect the SQL Server Analysis Services cube? or how can I get that information ASAP?
Many Thanks, Luis
Hello @LuisQuedas,
I am stuck in the same situation, and appreciate all your efforts to help Power BI users to work around that Live Connection restriction when using HTTP Data Pump (msmdpump.dll). In my case, however, I have another web service layer that is actually exposed to our customers, so that we can validate the user credentials in the context of our solution, then calls the Data Pump and wraps the response to be sent back to the client. With this, we can remove from the list databases that a specific user hasn't granted access to, thus isolating data as we have shared infrastructure to host many databases for many customers. This additional layer has been working like a charm, as Tableau and Excel have already proved that. We really need that Power BI Desktop becomes able to configure a Live Connection with Analysis Services, but also provide a way get connected via Basic Authentication, which is only available if we Import Data, which is not an option for us for many reasons.
Have you opened a ticket for that, as suggested by @v-chuncz-msft?
I would really like to follow that, if you don't mind, because I haven't see any progress on this matter.
Thanks
