Power BI Desktop Data Refresh Error After September 2024 Update

Hello Power BI Community,

I’m encountering an issue with data refresh in Power BI Desktop following the update released in September 2024. The problem began after updating to the latest version of Power BI Desktop on September 12, 2024.

Details:

  • Power BI Desktop Version: September 2024 (Version 2.121.1001)
  • Data Source: SQL Server
  • Error Message: “Data refresh failed: The underlying provider failed on Open.”
  • Update Date: September 12, 2024
  • Dataset Size: Approximately 200 MB

Problem Description:

  • The data refresh process used to work without issues, but now it fails with the error message above.
  • I have verified that the SQL Server is running and accessible.
  • No changes have been made to the dataset or queries themselves.

What I’ve Tried:

  1. Restarting Power BI Desktop: Restarted the application, but the issue persists.
  2. Checking Data Source Credentials: Credentials are correct and updated.
  3. Testing Connection: Ran a test connection in the Power BI Desktop and it appears successful.
  4. Reinstalling Power BI Desktop: Uninstalled and reinstalled the application, but the issue remains.

Has anyone else experienced similar issues after the September 2024 update? Are there any known solutions or troubleshooting steps that could help resolve this data refresh error?

Thank you for any assistance or insights you can provide!

Best regards,

Hi @marianoalmeyda ,

This is the download link for the latest version of PBI Desktop:

Download Microsoft Power BI Desktop from Official Microsoft Download Center

Please try downloading and installing it and see if that solves the problem.

Try to run the August 2024 version. Chances are that you actually downgraded your installation, and therefore is having the refreshing issues you well described.

Are you sure you are running the version 'September 2024'? And not the 'September 2023'?
1. As far as I know the version September 2024 has not been released yet.
2. Version 2.121.x was the number of the September version(s) released in 2023. Currently Power BI desktop version is already in the 2.132.x range (aug 2024).

I also got a September 2024 update. I was super jazzed (I won't give it away), but it was replaced within a handful of hours. You can see that the latest version was released on 9-20 even though it is labeled August. My not so important exploratory report blew up in the way described here. It kept complaining, so I abandoned it. Glad I did not open any production reports with it.
In theory, today, Tue 24th, ought to be the Sept. update. Here's hoping!!!!!

  • Check SSL Certificates: Power BI Desktop may fail to connect to SQL Server if there are issues with SSL certificates. Ensure the certificate from your SQL Server is trusted. If it's a self-signed certificate, add it to the Trusted Root Certification Authorities store

  • Disable Certificate Revocation: If the issue is related to certification revocation, you can disable this check in Power BI Desktop:

    • Go to Options and Settings > Options > Security > Uncheck Enable certificate revocation check
  • Server Name Match: If you are using SQL Server Native Client, ensure the server name used in Power BI (such as NetBIOS) matches the name in the SSL certificate. If the names differ (e.g., you’re using the Fully Qualified Domain Name, FQDN), update the server name to match

Hi @marianoalmeyda -Try re-entering your credentials in the data source settings:Go to File > Options and Settings > Data Source Settings.Find your SQL Server data source, and Clear Permissions.Reconnect to the server using the appropriate credentials.

You can enable diagnostic tracing in Power BI Desktop to get more detailed logs on what is causing the connection to fail:

Go to File > Options and Settings > Options > Diagnostics and enable Tracing.

After trying to refresh your data, check the logs for more detailed error messages in the Power BI Desktop\Traces folder.

Ensure that you’re running the 64-bit version of Power BI Desktop, as large datasets (200 MB or more) could face performance issues or connectivity failures in the 32-bit version.
