    Hi, 

    I apparently have gremlins in IT walking around and randomly updating things without telling anyone, and then denying it when asked. 

     

    THis was not part of windows updates, this was pushed intentionally.

That’s an interesting observation and definitely worth digging into. Based on what you’ve described, KB5066133 itself wouldn’t directly update Power BI Desktop. That update is a .NET cumulative patch, and while Power BI relies on .NET, those updates don’t replace or upgrade application binaries like Power BI Desktop. The most likely explanation is that something else in your environment triggered the change at the same time.

 

If your organization uses the Microsoft Store version of Power BI, it will automatically update when Microsoft releases a new build, and the timing may have coincided with the Windows update. If you’re certain it’s the non-Store installer managed through Ivanti, it’s worth checking Ivanti’s deployment history to confirm that no updated package was approved or pushed around the same time. You can also review the Application Event Log on one of the affected devices and look for MsiInstaller entries for Power BI.

 

Those logs usually reveal whether the installation came from Ivanti, the Store, or a local repair initiated by the system. The matching dates make it easy to assume KB5066133 caused the update, but it’s almost certainly a coincidence triggered by another mechanism. Once you confirm the source of the install from those logs, you’ll be able to pinpoint exactly what initiated the upgrade and prevent it from recurring if it wasn’t intentional.
