Power BI Connection to DataVerse giving Error

Hi All

Since last Thursday ive been getting random refresh errors and I have another below.

Microsoft SQL: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

So above is from a manual refsresh on PBI Desktop. Its not a direct query connection.

Any ideas how I can did deeper?

Thanks

Jimmy

Hi, @Anonymous

According to your description, a Power BI Desktop Refresh Error occurs when connecting to DataVerse and says "Unable to open a connection to SQL Server". You can try the following steps to resolve this problem.

1. Ensure that the SQL Server service is running on the host computer.
2. Verify that you are using the correct SQL Server instance name. Verify that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections, you can check this in SQL Server Configuration Manager under "SQL Server Network Configuration".
3. Test basic network connectivity using commands to the SQL Server host. Check that the TCP port on which SQL Server is listening (1433 by default) is accessible using or similar network tools.
4. Ensure that the firewall on the server allows traffic on the SQL Server port. For the default instance it is usually TCP port 1433, for named instances make sure that the SQL Server Browser service is allowed through the firewall.
5. Check that named pipes and TCP/IP protocols are enabled in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
6. Verify that your account has the necessary permissions for both SQL Server and DataVerse.

Sometimes it just means the internet/server signal you are using are unstable and cutting off the refresh progress. If automatic refresh, I don't exactly know how it can fail, but as long you manually refresh it again or wait for the next automatic refresh with good signal, the error should disappear by itself

@v-yaningy-msft   Many thanks. It turned out to be an  application  API issue; which made sense.

However great tips for troubleshooting.

Much appreaciated

Greetings, could you explain to me what exactly you did, I have the same problem and I cannot find the error since I use said database and server perfectly in the application, but when I try to configure the automatic refresh on the web by accessing the database it gives me that error, it would be very helpful please.
