Many users encounter an issue when trying to integrate Power BI with Power Apps using a Power BI Pro account. This often happens when attempting to embed a Power Apps visual into a Power BI report, or when trying to use Power Apps data within Power BI for interactive purposes. Despite following all the steps correctly, the integration fails, leaving users confused about why the setup is not working.
Common Symptoms:
Root Cause:
The main issue lies in the licensing requirement. Power BI and Power Apps integration, specifically embedding Power Apps visuals into Power BI reports, requires a Power BI Premium license or access to a workspace that is under Power BI Premium capacity. A Power BI Pro license, while useful for many other features, does not support this particular integration.
This limitation isn't always immediately apparent to users, which is why many assume the issue is related to settings or permissions. However, the integration feature simply won’t work without the Premium capacity.
Solution:
Step 1: Upgrade to Power BI Premium
To use the Power BI-Power Apps integration, you need to:
- Upgrade to Power BI Premium. This can be either a Premium-per-user (PPU) license or a workspace that has Premium capacity.
Step 2: Use a Premium Workspace
If upgrading your entire Power BI license isn’t feasible, another option is to move your reports to a workspace that is assigned with Premium capacity. This allows you to:
- Utilize Power Apps visuals within your reports.
- Embed Power Apps functionality within Power BI and use it for data manipulation.
Step 3: Consider Premium Per User (PPU)
- Power BI also offers a Premium Per User (PPU) option, which is less expensive than the full Premium license. If this is available to you, it will grant access to many Premium features, including the Power Apps integration.
Conclusion:
If you're encountering issues with Power BI and Power Apps integration while using a Power BI Pro account, it’s likely due to the licensing limitations. Upgrading to a Premium workspace or using Power BI Premium Per User (PPU) can unlock the full potential of the Power Apps and Power BI integration, allowing you to embed Power Apps visuals and create interactive reports that leverage both platforms effectively.
Always ensure you have the correct license to avoid frustration, and consider your organization’s needs to decide whether a full Premium license or Premium-per-user is the right choice for you!
